Sunnyside occupies part of western Queens just east of Long Island City. Population is around 50,000. The neighborhood was developed beginning in 1924 with Sunnyside Gardens, a planned cooperative community designed by architects Clarence Stein and Henry Wright that became a model for garden apartment development. Lewis Mumford, the urban planner and critic, lived in Sunnyside Gardens and wrote extensively about the project.
Queens Boulevard, running through the center of the neighborhood, carries the elevated 7 train. Sunnyside Yard, one of the largest rail yards in North America, occupies a substantial area in the northern part of the neighborhood and serves as a storage and maintenance facility for the Long Island Rail Road and Amtrak trains.
The population is highly diverse, with substantial Korean, Turkish, Romanian, Irish, Colombian, and Ecuadorian communities alongside more recent Bangladeshi and Himalayan arrivals. Greenpoint Avenue and Skillman Avenue hold commercial activity from many of these groups.
