Mott Haven occupies the southwestern corner of the Bronx at the Harlem River, directly across from Manhattan. Population is around 51,000. The neighborhood is named for Jordan L. Mott, an ironworks owner whose Mott Iron Works operated in the area beginning in 1828. The Third Avenue Bridge and Willis Avenue Bridge connect the neighborhood to Manhattan.
The neighborhood was substantially developed by the late 19th century, with rowhouses, tenements, and factories filling the area. Decline through much of the 20th century produced widespread disinvestment, which has partly reversed in recent decades. Recent high-rise residential development along the Harlem River waterfront, sometimes marketed as the "Piano District" in reference to the 19th-century Estey Piano Company that operated there, has drawn attention and criticism.
The Bronx Children's Museum, the Bronx Documentary Center, and Lincoln Hospital (a major public hospital on East 149th Street) operate in the neighborhood. The 2, 4, 5, and 6 trains all pass through or near the area.
