Hempstead is both an incorporated village and a township in Nassau County on Long Island. The village population is around 56,000; the township, which encompasses much of southern and central Nassau County, holds roughly 760,000 residents. The village sits at the southern end of the township, about 20 miles east of Manhattan.
Hofstra University operates its main campus on the border of the village, enrolling about 10,000 students. The school is named for William Hofstra, a lumber merchant whose wife Kate donated the estate that became the campus in 1935. Hofstra has hosted three presidential debates in the 21st century, in 2008, 2012, and 2016.
Uniondale, adjoining Hempstead Village, is home to the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, a 17,000-seat indoor arena that has hosted the New York Islanders and major concerts since 1972. Roosevelt Field Mall, in nearby Garden City, is one of the largest shopping malls in the country by gross leasable area.
