Flatlands: Old Dutch Brooklyn
Flatlands lies in southern Brooklyn south of Canarsie. Population is around 64,000. The area was one of the original six Dutch towns of Brooklyn, chartered as Nieuw Amersfoort in 1647. The Flatlands Reformed Church on Kings Highway was founded in 1654, and the current 1848 building stands on the original site.
The neighborhood's building stock is largely detached and semi-detached homes from the mid-20th century, with pockets of older Dutch-era structures and farmhouses. Wyckoff House, at 5816 Clarendon Road, was built around 1652 and is the oldest wood-frame house in New York State.
Kings Plaza Shopping Center, at the southern end of the neighborhood along Jamaica Bay, was one of the first enclosed shopping malls in New York City when it opened in 1970. The Flatbush Avenue commercial corridor runs through the neighborhood, connecting it to central Brooklyn.
