Clay is a town in Onondaga County immediately north of Syracuse, with a population around 58,000. It is the most populous town in Onondaga County after Syracuse itself.
The town developed as a suburb of Syracuse through the mid-20th century, and much of the housing stock dates from the 1950s through the 1980s. The Great Northern Mall and a number of shopping centers along Route 31 serve as regional retail nodes. Oneida Lake, the largest lake entirely within New York State, lies along the town's northern edge.
