West Orange: Thomas Edison's Working Laboratory
West Orange Township sits on the first ridge of the Watchung Mountains in Essex County. The population is approximately 48,000. Thomas Edison established his second, much larger laboratory complex on Main Street in West Orange in 1887 and worked there until his death in 1931. The complex now operates as Thomas Edison National Historical Park and preserves Edison's chemistry lab, machine shop, library, and the Black Maria, the world's first film studio.
The surrounding estate, Glenmont, was Edison's home in the Llewellyn Park community adjacent to the laboratory. Llewellyn Park itself was one of the first planned residential suburbs in the United States, laid out in 1857 by Alexander Jackson Davis on romantic landscape principles.
The South Mountain Reservation straddles the western edge of the township and offers 2,110 acres of woodland, waterfalls, and hiking trails. The Turtle Back Zoo sits within the reservation. Seton Hall Preparatory School and the Essex County's West Essex division operate in the township.
