Wayne Township covers 25 square miles in Passaic County and has a population of approximately 58,000. It was named for Anthony Wayne, the Revolutionary War general whose regiment camped at the Dey Mansion in the Preakness Valley section of the township in 1780. William Paterson University, founded in 1855 as a normal school and now a public university, occupies a campus in the township. The university enrolls roughly 10,000 students and is a component of the New Jersey state college system. Wayne also hosts the Willowbrook Mall, a large enclosed shopping center at the intersection of Route 46 and Route 23, and the headquarters of Toys R Us operated in the township until the company's liquidation in 2018.
The Pompton River and Passaic River flow along the township's southern and eastern boundaries, and flooding along these rivers has historically affected neighborhoods including Hoffman Grove and Riverview. Several of the most flood-prone houses have been bought out under state and federal buyout programs.
