Marlboro: Monmouth County Township and the Former State Hospital
Marlboro Township covers 30 square miles in Monmouth County and has a population of approximately 40,000. The community developed primarily as a residential suburb over the second half of the twentieth century, with horse farms and fruit orchards giving way to housing subdivisions along Route 9 and Route 79.
Marlboro Psychiatric Hospital operated on a 500-acre campus in the township from 1931 until its closure in 1998. Much of the former hospital land has been preserved as Big Brook Park and as the Marlboro Swim and Tennis Club. The hospital's main building was demolished in 2015 after extended debate about potential reuse.
The Count Basie Theatre in neighboring Red Bank draws audiences from across Monmouth County, and Marlboro residents rely on the Aberdeen-Matawan NJ Transit station and the Matawan Park & Ride for commutes to Manhattan.
