Cherry Hill Township occupies 24 square miles in western Camden County and borders Philadelphia on the Delaware River side. The township has a population of approximately 70,000. It was renamed from Delaware Township in 1961 after the Cherry Hill Mall, one of the first enclosed shopping malls on the East Coast, opened in 1961 and became the commercial core of the community.
The township straddles Route 70, Route 38, and Interstate 295, giving it direct highway access to Philadelphia across the Benjamin Franklin and Walt Whitman Bridges. Garden State Park, the former thoroughbred racetrack, closed in 2001 and the site was redeveloped into a mix of retail, residential, and office space. Cooper University Health Care operates one of its main facilities in the township.
