Windham is a town of about 13,000 residents in southern Rockingham County, bordering Salem to the east and Londonderry to the west. Originally part of the 1719 Nutfield settlement, it was incorporated as a separate town in 1742. For most of its history, Windham remained a farming community with a few scattered mills on Beaver Brook, but the opening of Interstate 93 changed that pattern starting in the 1960s.
Today the town is primarily residential and affluent, with most working residents commuting to Manchester, Nashua, or metropolitan Boston. The town's proximity to I-93 Exit 3 and the Massachusetts border means many residents drive into Massachusetts daily. Windham High School, opened in 2009, is one of the newer public high schools in New Hampshire and was built to serve the town's growing student population.
Canobie Lake extends into Windham from Salem, and Cobbetts Pond in the western part of town has a long-standing cottage community dating to the early twentieth century. Searles School and Chapel, a 1907 Tudor Revival complex built by Edward F. Searles, is a National Register site and now serves as a public meeting and events venue owned by the town.
