Derry, settled in 1719 as part of the Nutfield colony established by Scots-Irish immigrants from Ulster, is now a town of about 34,000 residents covering both the historic village core and a large stretch of post-World War II suburban development. Alan Shepard, the first American in space, was born and raised in East Derry, where his boyhood home is marked with a plaque.
