Spring Creek is an unincorporated community in Elko County, sitting in the Lamoille Valley about ten miles southeast of Elko itself. The population of roughly 12,400 makes it the largest CDP in the county and the second largest population center in the region after Elko. The community was platted in the early 1970s by Near Nevada Development Company, which sold large-lot homesites to buyers looking for acreage within commuting distance of the mines and government offices in Elko.
The Ruby Mountains rise sharply to the south and east of Spring Creek, reaching above 11,000 feet at Ruby Dome. The range defines the eastern horizon and dictates the weather patterns in the valley. Lamoille Canyon, a U-shaped glacial valley cut into the Ruby crest, draws hikers, anglers, and in winter heli-skiers who access the high country by helicopter from Ruby Mountain Heli-Experience. The Jarbidge Wilderness farther to the north and the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest surround the valley with public land.
Cattle ranching remains a visible part of the local economy, and Spring Creek residents often keep horses on their parcels. The Spring Creek Horse Palace indoor arena hosts rodeos, barrel races, and 4-H events throughout the year. Employment for most working residents runs to the gold mines of the Carlin Trend, including Nevada Gold Mines operations north and west of Elko, where shift schedules define the commute pattern along Lamoille Highway.
Elko County as a whole permits licensed brothels under the Nevada county-option system, and a small number of such operations exist elsewhere in the region. The community of Spring Creek itself, however, is an unincorporated residential and agricultural area with no licensed house of prostitution within its boundaries.
