Gardnerville Ranchos is an unincorporated community in Douglas County in the Carson Valley, at the base of the eastern Sierra Nevada. It was platted in the 1960s as a large residential subdivision on former ranchland south of the older town of Gardnerville. The community's population is approximately 11,300, and it sits roughly 15 miles south of Carson City along U.S. 395.
The Carson Valley contains some of Nevada's earliest European-American settlement. Mormon Station, established in 1851 near present-day Genoa, was the first permanent non-Native settlement in what would become Nevada. Gardnerville itself was founded in 1879 by Lawrence Gilman, who disassembled the Kent House hotel in Genoa and rebuilt it along the Carson River. The valley's ranching economy, based on cattle grazing and alfalfa irrigated by the east fork of the Carson River, remains visible in the working ranches that surround the Ranchos subdivision.
Lake Tahoe's South Shore is accessible via Kingsbury Grade and Luther Pass, about a 30-minute drive from Gardnerville Ranchos. Many residents commute to Carson City, Stateline, or South Lake Tahoe for work. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office provides law enforcement, and the community is served by the Douglas County School District.
