Sidney sits along Interstate 80 and the Union Pacific main line in western Nebraska, about forty miles east of the Wyoming border. The town was founded in 1867 as Sidney Barracks, a U.S. Army post established to protect Union Pacific construction crews from Cheyenne and Sioux attacks during the transcontinental railroad build. The post closed in 1894, but the town remained as a railroad division point and the seat of Cheyenne County.
Cabela's was founded in Sidney in 1961 when Dick Cabela placed a classified ad in a Casper, Wyoming newspaper selling hand-tied fishing flies. The company grew to become one of the largest outdoor recreation retailers in the United States and kept its headquarters in Sidney through decades of expansion. After Bass Pro Shops acquired Cabela's in 2017 the headquarters moved to La Vista, a blow to Sidney's economy that the community is still working through. The original Cabela's flagship store in Sidney remains in operation.
The 1875 Cheyenne County Courthouse in downtown Sidney still serves as the seat of county government. Sidney Army Depot, active from 1941 until 1967, occupied a site east of town. Western Nebraska Community College operates a satellite campus in Sidney, and agricultural operations in the surrounding county lean heavily on winter wheat, corn, and cattle.
