Helena Valley West Central is a census-designated place immediately northwest of Helena, extending from the city limits toward the Sleeping Giant formation and Hauser Dam. The area developed as Helena's population spilled outward along the valley floor during the second half of the 20th century. Like its sister CDPs to the east and southeast, it remains unincorporated and operates under the direct jurisdiction of Lewis and Clark County.
The Sleeping Giant Wilderness Study Area, which occupies roughly 11,000 acres to the north of the CDP, preserves a stretch of limestone formations along the Missouri River corridor. The outline of the ridge as viewed from Helena is said to resemble a reclining figure. Hauser Dam, completed in 1907 and rebuilt in 1910 after a catastrophic failure, impounds Hauser Lake and generates hydroelectricity for the regional grid.
Much of the CDP retains a semi-rural character: five- and ten-acre parcels, small hobby farms, and scattered commercial operations line the arterials. The 2020 census recorded roughly 7,900 residents, making it one of the larger unincorporated population centers in Montana. The community shares schools, fire protection, and library services with Helena proper and East Helena.
