Havre: Rail Division Point on the Hi-Line
Havre grew up along the Great Northern Railway's transcontinental main line, which James J. Hill completed to the Pacific in 1893. The town was named for Le Havre, France, at the suggestion of early French-American settlers, and became one of the principal division points on what Montanans call the Hi-Line, the string of railroad towns that runs across the state's northern tier. Some of the fort's brick buildings survive on what is now the Montana Agricultural Experiment Station. Montana State University-Northern, founded in 1929 as a normal school, operates on a campus near downtown and serves agricultural and technical programs across northern Montana. The Milk River, a tributary of the Missouri, winds just north of the city.
