Chesterfield occupies the Missouri River bottomland and bluffs in western St. Louis County. The Chesterfield Valley, once agricultural floodplain, was developed into a massive retail and office corridor after the completion of a levee system in the late 1990s. The 1993 Great Flood had submerged the entire valley, and the subsequent redevelopment transformed it into one of the largest commercial zones in the St. Louis area.
Chesterfield Mall, the Premium Outlets, and hundreds of retail and restaurant businesses line the valley floor along Chesterfield Airport Road. Above the valley, residential neighborhoods on the bluffs provide views southward across the river. The Butterfly House at Faust Park and the historic village within the park preserve elements of the area's pre-suburban character.
The city incorporated in 1988, relatively recently by Missouri standards, and has a population approaching 48,000. Corporate offices for several regional companies are located here, drawn by the highway access and relatively new building stock. Spirit of St. Louis Airport, a general aviation facility, occupies a large tract on the western edge of the city.
