South Boston: The Southie Neighborhood and Its Irish-American Spine

South Boston, known locally as Southie, occupies the peninsula that juts into Boston Harbor between Fort Point Channel and Dorchester Bay. The neighborhood was settled in the early nineteenth century after a bridge connected it to the rest of the city in 1805, but its identity as an Irish-American enclave took hold after the Famine migration of the 1840s and 1850s. By the mid-twentieth century Southie was among the most densely Irish-American neighborhoods in the United States, and the annual St. Patrick's Day Parade along East Broadway has run since 1901.

Dorchester Heights, the hill at the neighborhood's southern end, holds the site of one of the decisive Revolutionary War actions. In March 1776, George Washington's army mounted cannon hauled overland from Fort Ticonderoga on the heights, threatening the British fleet in the harbor below. The British evacuated Boston on March 17, 1776, a date still commemorated as Evacuation Day and observed in Suffolk County. The marble monument on Dorchester Heights, completed in 1902, is part of Boston National Historical Park.

The L Street Bathhouse, a city-owned bathing pavilion on Day Boulevard at Pleasure Bay, has been the winter headquarters of the L Street Brownies since 1902. The Brownies swim in Boston Harbor on New Year's Day, a tradition that predates the current wave of polar-plunge events by more than a century. Carson Beach and Pleasure Bay curve along the neighborhood's eastern edge as part of Boston's harbor parkland system.

The Seaport District, historically known as the Fort Point and South Boston waterfront, has been transformed since the 1990s by the Big Dig and the relocation of the Institute of Contemporary Art to its Diller Scofidio and Renfro-designed building at 25 Harbor Shore Drive in 2006. The ICA's cantilevered gallery hangs over the harbor walk. Office and residential construction has filled the former industrial piers along Summer Street and Seaport Boulevard, connecting Southie to the financial district via the Silver Line.
