Hyde Park: Boston's Southern Edge
Hyde Park is the southernmost neighborhood in Boston, annexed from the independent town of the same name in 1912. The Neponset River forms its western boundary with Dedham and Milton. The neighborhood was originally developed along the railroad lines that pass through Readville, Fairmount, and Hyde Park stations, all of which still serve the MBTA commuter rail system. The Fairmount Line, which runs from South Station to Readville, is one of the most locally focused commuter rail routes in the system.
Readville, the southern section of Hyde Park, was once home to a Civil War training camp where the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, one of the first African-American units in the Union Army, was organized in 1863. The Fairmount neighborhood sits at higher elevation, with views back toward the downtown skyline on clear days. Cleary Square, at the intersection of River Street and Hyde Park Avenue, functions as the commercial center.
Stony Brook Reservation, managed by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, provides wooded trails and the Turtle Pond recreation area in the western part of the neighborhood. George Wright Golf Course, a public course designed by Donald Ross in 1938, is considered one of the better municipal courses in New England.
