Gaithersburg is an incorporated city in central Montgomery County along the Interstate 270 corridor. Benjamin Gaither established a settlement here in the 1760s, and the original downtown centered on a railroad depot. The city now encompasses both the old town core and the massive Rio Washingtonian development on the east side of I-270.
The Kentlands, designed by architect Andres Duany in 1988, was one of the first new urbanist planned communities in the country. Lakelands, built next door, followed a similar pedestrian-oriented layout. Bohrer Park at Summit Hall Farm includes an indoor sports complex, water park, and event facilities. The Gaithersburg Book Festival, held annually in the city center, draws authors and readers from across the region.
