Dundalk, Baltimore County
Dundalk is an unincorporated community in southeastern Baltimore County, situated on a peninsula between Bear Creek and the Patapsco River. The Bethlehem Steel Corporation built much of the community as worker housing for its massive Sparrows Point steel plant, which at its peak employed over 30,000 people. The plant closed permanently in 2012.
Heritage Park and Stansbury Park provide recreation along the waterfront. The Community College of Baltimore County has a campus in Dundalk that serves the eastern side of the county. North Point State Park, at the tip of the peninsula, occupies the site of the former Bay Shore Amusement Park and includes trails along the Chesapeake Bay shoreline.
The closure of Sparrows Point shifted the local economy away from heavy manufacturing. Tradepoint Atlantic, the redevelopment project on the former steel mill site, has attracted Amazon, Under Armour distribution, and logistics companies to the 3,100-acre parcel. Dundalk's housing stock is dominated by modest row houses and semi-detached homes built in the 1940s and 1950s.
