Chalmette is an unincorporated community in St. Bernard Parish, located just east of New Orleans along the Mississippi River. The population is approximately 16,800. The Chalmette Battlefield, part of Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve, is the site where Andrew Jackson's forces defeated the British on January 8, 1815, in the Battle of New Orleans.
St. Bernard Parish was one of the most devastated areas during Hurricane Katrina. The storm surge overtopped and breached levees along the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet (MRGO), flooding virtually the entire parish. MRGO was subsequently closed to navigation in 2009. Rebuilding has been slow, and the parish's population remains well below pre-Katrina levels.
The community is primarily residential and working-class. The Chalmette Refining facility (now PBF Energy) is one of the largest industrial operations in the parish.
