Valley Station is a census-designated place in southwestern Jefferson County, positioned between the Ohio River and Dixie Highway south of downtown Louisville. The community developed during the mid-20th century as part of the broader suburban expansion along the river corridor. Its name reflects the valley-like topography between the river bluffs and the elevated ground further inland.
Like other unincorporated areas of Jefferson County, Valley Station became part of the Louisville Metro government following the 2003 merger. The area does not have its own municipal administration and relies on Louisville Metro for police, road maintenance, and other public services. Residential neighborhoods of modest single-family homes make up the majority of the built environment, with commercial activity concentrated along Dixie Highway.
The Ohio River shoreline in this part of Jefferson County includes both residential stretches and areas affected by periodic flooding. The 1937 Ohio River flood, which inundated much of Louisville, left a lasting mark on building patterns and flood infrastructure throughout the valley communities. Sun Valley Park and other local green spaces provide recreational options within the otherwise developed landscape.
