Mount Washington is a city in Bullitt County, located about 20 miles south of Louisville along KY Route 44. The community was established in the early 1800s and took its name from the local topography. For most of its history, Mount Washington was a small rural crossroads. That changed in the late 20th century as the Louisville metropolitan area expanded southward along the I-65 corridor.
Residential growth has been the primary story. New subdivisions replaced farmland throughout the 1990s and 2000s, and the population grew from a few thousand to more than 14,000. Many residents commute to Louisville or the industrial corridor along I-65 through Bullitt County for work. Retail development, including grocery stores and chain restaurants, has followed the population growth along KY 44 and Bardstown Road.
Bullitt County's proximity to Louisville makes it attractive to families looking for lower property taxes and newer housing stock. The county also has a significant bourbon connection: Jim Beam's Clermont facility and other distillery operations are located within Bullitt County, and the Kentucky Bourbon Trail passes through the area.
