Madisonville is the county seat of Hopkins County in western Kentucky. The city was established in 1807 and named after James Madison, then Secretary of State. For most of its history, coal mining dominated the local economy. Hopkins County was one of the leading coal-producing counties in the state, with both surface and underground mines operating across the area. The Western Kentucky coalfield extends through much of the county.
Coal production has declined sharply since its peak, and Madisonville has worked to attract other industries. Baptist Health Madisonville is the largest employer in Hopkins County, and several manufacturing operations, including automotive parts and food processing, have established facilities along the industrial corridors near the Pennyrile Parkway. The city's location at the intersection of the Pennyrile Parkway and US 41 gives it highway access to Evansville, Indiana, and Hopkinsville.
Madisonville Community College, part of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System, serves as the primary post-secondary institution in the area. The city maintains a small but functional downtown district around the courthouse, and Mahr Park Arboretum on the eastern edge of town provides green space and walking trails.
