Jeffersontown is an independent city within Jefferson County, located roughly 10 miles southeast of downtown Louisville. While it falls within the Louisville Metro government structure created by the 2003 merger, Jeffersontown retained its own city government, police force, and municipal services. The city traces its origins to 1797, when it was established as a waystation on the road between Louisville and the settlements further south.
The Bluegrass Commerce Park and other industrial developments along Taylorsville Road and Hurstbourne Parkway have made Jeffersontown one of the more significant employment centers in eastern Jefferson County. Several technology firms, logistics companies, and regional offices for national corporations are based here. The city actively recruited these operations beginning in the 1980s, and the effort shifted Jeffersontown's character from a residential suburb to a mixed commercial and residential community.
Gaslight Festival, held annually since 1975, is the largest street festival in the Louisville area. It draws more than 100,000 visitors over four days and includes live music, a parade, and a road race. The festival takes its name from the gas-powered streetlights that once lined the city's main streets.
