Burlington is the county seat of Boone County in northern Kentucky, positioned roughly 15 miles south of Cincinnati along US Route 18. The city itself remains small in area and population, but it serves as the administrative center for one of the fastest-growing counties in Kentucky. Boone County's population has more than tripled since 1970, driven by the southward expansion of the Cincinnati metropolitan area.
The Boone County Courthouse in Burlington has been the center of county governance since the 1800s. The surrounding area retains a semi-rural character, with horse pastures and farmland still visible along the roads outside the small commercial core. This stands in contrast to the heavily developed northern portion of the county around Florence and the airport.
Boone County's economy benefits from the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport to the north and the Amazon Air Hub currently under construction there. Logistics, distribution, and e-commerce operations have become significant employers, and the population growth has brought new schools, retail centers, and residential developments to communities across the county, including the areas south and east of Burlington.
