Parsons was established in 1870 as a junction point for the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad (the "Katy") and the Missouri River, Fort Scott and Gulf Railroad. The town was named after Levi Parsons, president of the MKT line. Railroad shops and a roundhouse made Parsons the largest city in Labette County and an employment center for the surrounding region through the mid-twentieth century.
When the railroad industry declined, Parsons shifted toward manufacturing, healthcare, and education. Labette Community College, a two-year institution, serves the area from a campus on the south side of town. Parsons State Hospital operated from 1903 to 1994, and its former grounds have been partially repurposed. The population stands at approximately 10,100.
Marvel Park and Forest Park provide outdoor recreation within city limits. Parsons sits near the intersection of U.S. Highways 59, 160, and 400, maintaining its role as a transportation crossroads in a rural part of the state. The Labette County Museum and the Parsons War Memorial Museum document local and military history.
