Hutchinson was founded in 1871 by Clinton "C.C." Hutchinson, a Baptist minister who saw potential in the site along the Arkansas River. The discovery of massive salt deposits in 1887 transformed the town into a mining center. The Strataca underground salt museum, located 650 feet below the surface in a former Carey Salt mine, allows visitors to explore the working mine and its storage vaults. The mine stores original film reels, business records, and government documents for companies and agencies that need climate-controlled underground preservation.
The Kansas State Fair has been held in Hutchinson every September since 1913. The fairgrounds cover more than 280 acres and draw hundreds of thousands of visitors over an eleven-day run. The Cosmosphere, officially the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center, houses one of the largest collections of U.S. and Russian space artifacts outside the Smithsonian, including the actual Apollo 13 command module Odyssey.
Hutchinson's population is approximately 41,500. The city serves as the seat of Reno County and functions as a regional commercial hub for the agricultural communities of central Kansas. Dillon's, a Kroger subsidiary grocery chain, was founded in Hutchinson in 1913.
The Hutchinson Community College Blue Dragons compete in NJCAA athletics and have produced multiple professional athletes. The Kansas State Reformatory, a medium-security correctional facility, also operates within the city. Carey Park, a 200-acre municipal park along the Arkansas River, includes a golf course, swimming pool, and athletic fields.
