Gardner: Southern Johnson County's Growing Suburb
Gardner was established in 1857 and sits at the southwest corner of Johnson County. The city served as a junction point on the Santa Fe and Oregon-California trails, where wagon trains chose their westward route. A historical marker at the intersection of Main Street and Center Street commemorates this trail split. For over a century, Gardner remained a small farming town.
Residential development surged after 2000 as Johnson County's suburban growth pushed south along U.S. Highway 56 and Interstate 35. Gardner's population jumped from around 9,000 in 2000 to more than 20,800 today. New subdivisions, a BNSF Railway intermodal facility, and commercial construction along the highway corridor have reshaped the city's landscape.
Celebration Park hosts community events and houses sports fields and a playground complex. Gardner Lake provides fishing and trail access on the city's eastern edge. The school district, USD 231, has added multiple facilities to keep pace with enrollment growth driven by the housing boom.
