Martinsville is the county seat of Morgan County, located about 30 miles southwest of Indianapolis along State Road 37. The city was founded in 1822 and named after John Martin, one of the area's early settlers.
Martinsville was known in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries for its mineral water sanitariums. Visitors came to "take the waters" at facilities that piped artesian mineral water for therapeutic bathing. Most of the sanitariums closed by mid-century, but the tradition is remembered locally.
The city's population of approximately 11,700 has remained stable. The completion of the Interstate 69 extension through Morgan County has improved Martinsville's connection to Indianapolis and Bloomington. Jimmy Bryan, the 1958 Indianapolis 500 winner, and John Wooden, the legendary basketball coach, both came from the Martinsville area.
The Morgan-Monroe State Forest, one of the largest state forests in Indiana, borders the city to the south and east. The forest covers over 24,000 acres of hardwood hills and provides hunting, hiking, and camping opportunities.
