Sunrise, Florida: Sawgrass Mills and the Panthers in Western Broward
Sunrise was incorporated in 1961 on land that had been dairy farms and Everglades scrub. Norman Johnson, a developer, built the original community of "Sunrise Golf Village" and marketed it as an affordable alternative to the coastal cities in Broward County. The city expanded westward over the following decades, absorbing additional land and population. Today more than 84,000 people live in Sunrise.
Sawgrass Mills, which opened in 1990, is the largest outlet and value retail shopping center in the United States. The mall draws over 26 million visitors annually and serves as the commercial anchor of the city. Adjacent to it, the Amerant Bank Arena (formerly BB&T Center) is the home ice of the Florida Panthers of the NHL, who won the Stanley Cup in 2024. The arena also hosts concerts, boxing, and other events.
Sunrise borders the Everglades on its western edge. Markham Park, a 666-acre county park within the city limits, offers mountain biking trails, a shooting range, and a model airplane field. The city's location along the Sawgrass Expressway and I-595 puts it within 20 minutes of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
