Fort Myers: Lee County Seat on the Caloosahatchee
Fort Myers was named for Colonel Abraham C. Myers and established as a military fort during the Seminole Wars in the 1850s. The town did not incorporate until 1885 and remained small for decades. Thomas Edison built a winter estate on the banks of the Caloosahatchee River in 1886, and his friend Henry Ford purchased the adjacent property in 1916. The Edison and Ford Winter Estates, now a museum complex, preserve the laboratories, botanical gardens, and homes along McGregor Boulevard, which Edison lined with royal palms that still shade the road.
Downtown Fort Myers, centered on the River District along First Street, went through decades of decline after suburban malls drew commerce away in the 1970s and 1980s. Revitalization efforts beginning in the 2000s brought restaurants, galleries, and residential lofts back to the historic buildings. The Caloosahatchee River provides the downtown waterfront, and the river connects Lake Okeechobee to the Gulf of Mexico via a canal system built by the Army Corps of Engineers.
