Wilmington Manor is a census-designated place in New Castle County with approximately 7,890 residents. The community lies just south of Wilmington's city limits along the Route 13 corridor, between the city and New Castle proper. Most of the housing stock dates from the 1940s and 1950s, built to accommodate workers employed at the nearby industrial facilities and the Wilmington waterfront.
The area is characterized by compact row homes and small single-family houses on narrow lots, giving it a denser feel than many of Delaware's suburban CDPs. Wilmington Manor Gardens, the residential core, was developed as a planned community during World War II. Commercial services are found along Route 13 (Governor Printz Boulevard) and nearby New Castle Avenue, where auto repair shops, diners, and small retail businesses operate alongside newer chain establishments.
Wilmington Manor falls within the Colonial School District. The community has direct access to Route 9, which follows the Delaware River south through marshland and past the DuPont Environmental Education Center at the Russell W. Peterson Wildlife Refuge. Fort Delaware State Park, accessible by ferry from Delaware City a few miles south, occupies Pea Patch Island in the Delaware River and preserves a Civil War-era fortification.
