Felton: A Kent County Town on the Old Railway Line
Felton is a town of about 1,400 people in central Kent County, laid out in 1856 along the Delaware Railroad line that ran south from Wilmington toward the ferry terminal at Delmar. The town was named for Samuel Felton, then president of the railroad. The original station platform has been replaced many times over, but freight trains on the Norfolk Southern Delmarva Secondary still pass through the town daily, hauling agricultural products and chemicals from the lower peninsula.
Killen's Pond State Park sits just east of Felton and preserves a 66-acre millpond that dates to the eighteenth century. The park includes one of Delaware's two state-operated water parks, a network of trails through hardwood forest and cypress swamp, and a campground. The Choptank River begins its course a few miles west of town before flowing into Maryland and eventually the Chesapeake Bay.
