Windsor straddles the border of Weld and Larimer counties in northern Colorado, positioned roughly midway between Fort Collins and Greeley. The town was founded in 1882 as a farming community, and agriculture remained central to the local economy for over a century. Sugar beet farming was particularly important during the early decades. In recent years, Windsor has become one of the fastest-growing communities in the state.
The population has reached approximately 21,750, and new subdivisions continue to appear on the town's edges. The Great Western Reservoir on the eastern side provides irrigation water and has become a recreational draw. The downtown area along Main Street retains some of its small-town character, with a handful of restaurants, shops, and the Windsor Mill, a renovated grain elevator that now houses a tavern.
Windsor's growth is driven by its position along the I-25 and Highway 34 corridors, which provide access to both Fort Collins and the Denver metro area. The Poudre River trail system is accessible from the northern part of town. New commercial development along Highway 34 includes shopping centers and medical facilities. Eastman Park, on the east side of town, hosts community sports events.
