Twin Lakes: A High-Country CDP Near Leadville in Lake County
Twin Lakes is a census-designated place in Lake County, situated at approximately 9,200 feet along the base of the Sawatch Range about 20 miles south of Leadville and just west of the Continental Divide. The community takes its name from the Twin Lakes reservoir, two connected bodies of water formed by damming Lake Creek. The original lakes were natural glacial formations, but they were enlarged in the late 1800s and again in the twentieth century as part of the Fryingpan-Arkansas water diversion project that moves Western Slope water to the Arkansas River basin on the Eastern Slope.
The population is small, roughly 6,101 according to census estimates that include the broader surrounding area. Many of the residences are seasonal cabins or vacation homes rather than year-round dwellings. The lake draws anglers for its populations of lake trout, brown trout, and kokanee salmon. The Colorado Trail and the Continental Divide Trail both pass through the area, making Twin Lakes a resupply point for long-distance hikers. Mount Elbert, the highest peak in Colorado at 14,440 feet, rises directly to the north, and the trailhead for its most popular route is a few miles from the community.
Independence Pass, the 12,095-foot crossing that connects the Twin Lakes area to Aspen on the Western Slope, is one of the highest paved mountain passes in North America. It is open only from late May through early November, depending on snow conditions. During those months, traffic through Twin Lakes increases substantially as tourists and cyclists tackle the pass. Highway 82 runs through the community, and the old Twin Lakes general store and a few lodges provide the only commercial services in the immediate area.
