Pueblo West began as a land development project in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when McCulloch Properties (the same company behind Lake Havasu City, Arizona) sold residential lots on the arid mesa west of Pueblo. The development was marketed nationally, and many buyers purchased sight unseen. Infrastructure was limited at first, and growth came slowly. Today Pueblo West is a census-designated place in Pueblo County with close to 30,000 residents.
The landscape is high desert: dry grassland, scattered pinon and juniper, and wide views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains to the west. Lake Pueblo State Park lies along the southern and eastern edges of the community, offering a reservoir popular for boating, fishing, and camping. The climate is drier and sunnier than the Denver area, with hot summers and mild winters by Colorado standards.
Pueblo West has no incorporated town government. The Pueblo West Metropolitan District provides water, parks, and some services, while the Pueblo County Sheriff handles law enforcement. Commercial development has expanded along Highway 50, the main east-west corridor, with grocery stores, restaurants, and medical offices serving the growing population. Many residents commute to Pueblo or work remotely.
