Loveland: The Sweetheart City Between Fort Collins and Denver
Loveland earned its nickname "Sweetheart City" through a Valentine's Day remailing program that has operated since 1947. Each February, the post office receives hundreds of thousands of cards from around the world to be hand-stamped with a special cachet and postmarked from Loveland. The city was named after William A.H. Loveland, president of the Colorado Central Railroad, and incorporated in 1881. Today it has about 75,200 residents and sits in Larimer County along the Big Thompson River.
Public art and sculpture define Loveland's cultural identity more than any other factor. Benson Park Sculpture Garden contains over 160 pieces, and the city hosts multiple sculpture shows each year, including the Loveland Sculpture Invitational. Bronze foundries and artist studios are scattered throughout town, and several sculptors of national reputation maintain workshops here.
The Northern Colorado Regional Airport, shared with Fort Collins, handles general aviation and some commercial charter traffic. The city's economy is mixed: manufacturing, healthcare, and construction all play significant roles. Loveland is also the gateway to the Big Thompson Canyon, the route that leads up to Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park.
