Greeley: Agriculture, Energy, and the Northern Colorado Plains
Nathan Meeker founded the Union Colony here in 1870 as a utopian agricultural community, and farming has remained central to Greeley's identity ever since. The city is the seat of Weld County, the most productive agricultural county in Colorado and one of the top-producing counties in the entire United States. Cattle feedlots, sugar beet processing, and meatpacking plants have shaped the local economy for generations. JBS, the Brazilian-owned meat company, operates a massive beef processing facility in Greeley that employs thousands.
Oil and gas extraction is the other pillar. Weld County sits atop the Denver-Julesburg Basin, and the county consistently produces more oil than any other in Colorado. Drilling rigs are visible from the city's eastern and northern edges. The combination of agriculture and energy has given Greeley an economic character distinct from the tech-and-services profile of the cities along the I-25 corridor to the west.
The University of Northern Colorado, established in 1889, brings roughly 12,000 students to town. The campus is on the western side of the city, and UNC's music and education programs have a long-standing reputation. Downtown Greeley has a small cluster of restaurants and shops along 8th and 9th Avenues, though much commercial activity has shifted to the 10th Street and US-34 corridors.
