Oxnard: Strawberry Fields and the Channel Islands Gateway
Oxnard is the largest city in Ventura County, with a population of about 207,000. The Oxnard Plain is one of the most productive agricultural zones in California, and the city's economy has deep roots in field crops. Strawberries are the signature product: Ventura County produces more strawberries than any other county in the state, and the fields surrounding Oxnard are a major part of that output. Channel Islands Harbor, located in the southern part of the city, provides boat access to Channel Islands National Park. The islands are home to species found nowhere else on earth, including the island fox and the island scrub-jay. Tourism related to the park and to beach recreation contributes to the local economy alongside agriculture.
