Pocahontas on the Black River

Randolph County's county seat, Pocahontas sits along the Black River in the rolling terrain of northeastern Arkansas where the Ozark Plateau meets the Gulf Coastal Plain. The city has a population around 6,400 and serves as the commercial center for a county that stretches from the Missouri border southward into the river bottoms. The Black River, a tributary of the White River, passes through the center of town and has shaped the community since its founding in the 1830s.

Pocahontas was named after the Powhatan woman famous in Virginia colonial history, though the connection to northeastern Arkansas is purely nominal. The Old Davidsonville State Park, located south of town, preserves the site of Davidsonville, one of the earliest American settlements in Arkansas Territory and the first post office in the region. The archaeological site has been partially excavated, revealing the layout of a frontier community that existed from 1815 until its abandonment in the 1830s.

The local economy depends on agriculture, timber, and small-scale manufacturing. Black River Technical College, with its main campus in Pocahontas, provides workforce training and two-year degrees. The college's nursing and welding programs are particularly well-enrolled. Randolph County's isolation from major highways has limited outside investment, though the town maintains a functioning downtown with local shops, a courthouse square, and a handful of restaurants.

Fishing on the Black River draws anglers targeting smallmouth bass and catfish, particularly during the spring and fall months. The river corridor also supports canoeing and kayaking, though the float trip outfitter infrastructure is less developed than on the more popular Buffalo and Spring Rivers to the west.
