Jonesboro: Northeast Arkansas and the Delta's Edge
Jonesboro sits on Crowley's Ridge, a narrow geological formation that rises above the flat Mississippi Alluvial Plain of eastern Arkansas. The ridge, formed by wind-blown loess deposits during the last ice age, gives Jonesboro a slightly different topography and soil composition than the surrounding delta farmland. Cotton and rice dominate the fields below the ridge; Jonesboro itself functions as the commercial and medical center for a large swath of northeast Arkansas.
Arkansas State University, founded in 1909 as an agricultural school, now enrolls over 13,000 students and is the economic anchor of Craighead County. The university's Red Wolves compete in the Sun Belt Conference, and the football stadium draws some of the largest regular gatherings in the region. St. Bernards Medical Center and NEA Baptist Memorial Hospital are the two major healthcare employers.
With a population approaching 74,000, Jonesboro has grown steadily while much of the surrounding delta has lost population for decades. The city's retail and restaurant corridors along Red Wolf Boulevard and Highland Drive serve as the shopping destination for counties in every direction. A Costco opened in 2022, which in a region this size is treated as a significant economic indicator.
