Fort Smith occupies the western edge of Arkansas where the Arkansas and Poteau rivers meet at the Oklahoma border. The original military post was established in 1817 to keep peace between the Osage and Cherokee nations. By the 1870s, the fort had been repurposed as a federal court under Judge Isaac C. Parker, who presided over more than 13,000 cases and sentenced 160 people to death during his 21 years on the bench. The courthouse and gallows are preserved at Fort Smith National Historic Site.
With roughly 88,000 residents, Fort Smith is the second-largest city in Arkansas. The economy leans on manufacturing, healthcare, and its position as a logistics corridor between the central plains and the mid-South. Baldor Electric, now part of ABB, and ArcBest Corporation both maintain significant operations here. The city straddles the line between the Ozark Plateau to the north and the Arkansas River Valley to the south.
The Marshals Museum, which opened in 2023, sits on the riverfront and tells the history of the U.S. Marshals Service from 1789 forward. Fort Smith's connection to law enforcement history runs deep, not just through Judge Parker but through the hundreds of deputy marshals who rode out of here into Indian Territory to enforce federal law across what is now Oklahoma.
