Sutton-Alpine is an unincorporated CDP in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough along the Glenn Highway east of Palmer, running from Sutton itself through the community of Alpine toward Chickaloon. About 1,450 residents live along the highway corridor and in the side drainages cut by the Matanuska River and its tributaries. The community owes its existence to the Matanuska coal field, which the Chickaloon branch of the Alaska Railroad served from 1917 until the 1920s.
The Alpine Historical Park in Sutton preserves the bunkhouse and other surviving structures from the coal mining period, when Sutton was the supply point for the underground mines at Eska, Jonesville, and Premier. Coal mining continued in the area in reduced form through the 1960s. The Matanuska Valley Coal Mining District left behind tailings, shafts, and the rail grade that is now the route of the Chickaloon Road.
The Matanuska Glacier, about 40 miles further east along the Glenn Highway, is one of the few road-accessible glaciers in Alaska. The highway climbs through the Chugach Mountains toward Glennallen and the Wrangell-St. Elias region, making Sutton-Alpine a stop on the drive between Anchorage and the eastern Interior.
