Susitna North is an unincorporated CDP in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough along the Parks Highway north of Willow, stretched along the Susitna River valley. About 1,260 residents occupy scattered parcels on the highway and in the drainages cut by the Susitna and its tributaries. The CDP was defined by the Census Bureau to capture the loose cluster of settlement between Willow and Talkeetna.
The Iditarod Trail passes through the area: mushers leaving the Willow restart on the first Sunday in March run north and west through this corridor before turning toward Finger Lake and the mountains. The Alaska Railroad's mainline between Anchorage and Fairbanks also runs through the CDP, with flag stops still served on request. Denali National Park's southern boundary lies roughly 100 road miles further up the Parks Highway.
Subsistence moose hunting, trapping, and small-scale placer mining continue on the surrounding state and federal lands. The broader Susitna basin contains salmon runs that sustain sportfishing lodges operating out of Willow and Talkeetna. Spring breakup on the Susitna is dramatic, with ice jams forming and clearing over days.
