Funny River on the Kenai's South Fork
Funny River is an unincorporated CDP along the lower Kenai River on the south side of the Sterling Highway corridor, reached by a bridge over the river from Soldotna. About 1,100 residents live on a mix of wooded lots and riverfront parcels along Funny River Road. The name traces back to surveyors who described the waterway as amusingly crooked rather than to anything else.
The 2014 Funny River Fire burned 193,000 acres of the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge south of the community, destroying habitat used by the Kenai Peninsula caribou herd and shifting moose winter range for years afterward. Black spruce and white spruce forests are slowly regenerating through the burn scar. Funny River Road passes through a landscape still marked by standing dead timber and dense fireweed in summer.
Sockeye salmon and king salmon runs on the Kenai River drive much of the summer economy, and riverbank guiding operations work out of lodges along the road. Winter use is mostly local, with trappers, moose hunters during the bow season, and snowmachine traffic to the more remote trapper cabins deeper inside the refuge boundary.
