Elmendorf Air Force Base: Now Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson
What is still commonly called Elmendorf Air Force Base has operated since 2010 as part of Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, or JBER, following the merger of Elmendorf AFB with the neighboring Army post Fort Richardson. The installation occupies more than 84,000 acres along the northern edge of the Municipality of Anchorage, between Knik Arm and the Chugach foothills. The base's elevation and bluff position over Knik Arm provide direct sightlines to Denali and Mount Foraker on clear days.
