Montgomery: State Capital and the Birthplace of the Civil Rights Movement

Montgomery has served as the capital of Alabama since 1846, when the legislature moved the seat of state government from Tuscaloosa. The city sits on a bluff above the Alabama River in the south-central part of the state, serves as the seat of Montgomery County, and holds a population of roughly 195,000. In February 1861, delegates from seven seceded Southern states met in the Alabama State Capitol on Goat Hill and formed the Confederate States of America; Jefferson Davis took his oath of office as Confederate president on the Capitol portico. The building, still in use, carries a star marking the spot.

On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery city bus, an act that triggered the 381-day Montgomery Bus Boycott led in part by a 26-year-old minister named Martin Luther King Jr. at the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church. King's parsonage on South Jackson Street is now a museum, as is the Rosa Parks Museum on Montgomery Street. The boycott ended in December 1956 after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled segregated buses unconstitutional, and the events positioned Montgomery as a defining battleground of the Civil Rights Movement.

The Southern Poverty Law Center headquarters stands a few blocks from the state capitol, and the Civil Rights Memorial designed by Maya Lin, completed in 1989, sits in front of the SPLC offices. The National Memorial for Peace and Justice, opened in 2018 by the Equal Justice Initiative, documents more than 4,400 lynchings of Black Americans through suspended corten steel markers for each county where a racial terror lynching took place. The accompanying Legacy Museum traces the history from slavery through mass incarceration.

Maxwell Air Force Base and its Gunter Annex house the Air University, the United States Air Force's center for professional military education. The base is the largest employer in the Montgomery metropolitan area. The Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama plant, operational since 2005, produces Santa Fe, Tucson, and Elantra vehicles and employs several thousand workers at its facility south of the city.
