Clay is a small city of about 9,650 people on the eastern fringe of Jefferson County. It incorporated in 2000, making it one of the newer municipalities in the Birmingham metro area. Before incorporation, the area was an unincorporated community that gradually filled with residential subdivisions as families moved further from Birmingham's urban core in search of affordable housing and good schools.
Cosby Lake, a 40-acre reservoir built in the 1960s, is the closest thing Clay has to a landmark. The lake serves as a stormwater management feature but also provides fishing and a walking trail around its perimeter. Aside from Cosby Lake, Clay is defined by its subdivisions, a few churches, and the commercial businesses along Old Springville Road.
The Pinson Valley area to the north and the Trussville corridor to the west offer most of the retail and restaurant options that Clay residents use day to day. Clay itself has limited commercial development, which is part of its appeal for residents who wanted a quieter address within commuting distance of Birmingham.
